Introduction

A forum shaping the standards of clinical practice, together

The Korean Board of Veterinary Practitioners (KBVP), led by President Hyun-Wook Kim, is a professional veterinary forum that practices the One Health philosophy, recognizing that the health of humans, animals, and the environment is fundamentally interconnected. Grounded in veterinary expertise, the forum goes beyond the mere sharing of clinical techniques to emphasize the social responsibility and public health role of veterinarians, while actively contributing to the development of sound clinical culture and policy recommendations.

One of KBVP’s most distinguished areas of activity is its scientific investigation into social disasters and the pursuit of factual clarity. During the humidifier disinfectant tragedy, the forum recognized companion animals as victims alongside humans and conducted an independent damage assessment. Through this work, KBVP demonstrated that companion animals can serve as early “sentinels,” detecting harmful substances in domestic environments before human exposure occurs. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Special Commission on Social Disaster Investigation, the forum contributed to the publication of the case report Beginning at the End and leveraged these findings to propose preventive frameworks, thereby playing a substantive role in the development of practical social safety measures.

These initiatives are directly translated into educational programs that support real-world clinical practice. KBVP regularly hosts symposia and professional forums to provide veterinarians with education on the latest clinical trends. In particular, the forum raises awareness of infection risks faced by veterinarians in relation to severe zoonotic diseases such as Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), while delivering concrete clinical guidelines and preventive protocols. Through this approach, KBVP safeguards not only the personal safety of veterinarians but also strengthens infection control within veterinary hospitals and protects animal owners. In addition, the forum actively leads academic exchange in collaboration with related organizations, including national veterinary hospital associations, and continues its efforts to elevate and standardize the overall clinical quality of frontline animal hospitals.

In addition, the forum upholds the Human–Animal Bond (HAB) as a core value, advocating that companion animals are not merely pets but vital social assets within our society. Through this perspective, the Korean Board of Veterinary Practitioners positions professional clinical education and proactive social engagement as its two guiding pillars, playing a central role in fostering a healthier society in which humans and animals coexist in mutual well-being.
